How the 2026 Hipcamp Awards winners were chosen

  1. One year of data. Everything comes from the trailing 365 days of trips through August 2026, across the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia. No campground is ranked on its lifetime record.
  2. Five eligibility gates. At least 10 bookings, 10 different campers, and 10 ratings — plus 90% of campers recommending the campground and 90% saying the trip met or beat expectations. About 4,600 campgrounds cleared all five.
  3. Ratings adjusted for size and scale. A 10-for-10 campground and a 97-for-100 campground aren't equal evidence, and a one-site property can never collect as many reviews as a twenty-site one. So ratings are statistically adjusted for how much evidence sits behind them, and campgrounds compete within site-count bands rather than against the whole field.
  4. A 100-point score. Ratings hold 45 of the points. The reviews themselves hold the other 55: a language model read every review and scored its sentiment — enthusiasm, the range of things campers praise, repeat-booking intent, and fit for the category, with a penalty for repeated complaints. Category winners had to earn it on their own terms: RV winners, for example, needed campers praising hookups and rig amenities specifically.
  5. People picked the winners. Hipcamp staff chose the final winners from the resulting shortlists.
